One of Channing Tatum’s earliest movies was a dark low budget New York drama A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints. The June cover star tells GQ about the night he and his co-star in the movie, Shia LeBeouf, bonded on a wild night that took place directly before filming started.

“Me and Shia, I think we had just met that day. We were, like, ‘what shall we go out and do?’ We were drinking. And I think our initial thing was ’Alright, let’s go out and try and get in a fight!’ This was just young dumb idiot actors thinking that that’s going to bond us. Because we’ll shed blood together blah blah blah. I’ve never seen him since then. The kid’s an incredible actor…I just wish that he would just act. Just act, man!”

“I definitely kicked in a window that night. But it wasn’t Barnes and Nobles. Just a window. I was running.”

“We were just running and being hoodlums and throwing trash bags down streets and just being stupid. We were trying to be like eighties hoodlums. And I think as we were running I kicked this thing, not thinking that it would ever shatter. And everything just went raining down. And I was like ‘oh shit’. And then we just took off running.”

“We all split up. I think Shia even punched a cop car—we weren’t even sure if the cop was in the car, he punched the window of a cop car. It was pandemonium. It was just one of those nights that the volume just keeps getting turned up, turned up, turned up. And we all split up. We all just ran in opposite directions. I didn’t hide under a car, I dove in some trash bags: ‘I’m sitting here for a little while’. In hindsight it’s the funniest thing in the world—just typical actors trying too hard. It’s only fun because we didn’t get caught…that I can have perspective on it now and know it was stupid. I don’t think we were thinking.”

50 Cent Mentors GQ’S Zach Baron

For years now, the man who wrote Get Rich or Die Tryin’ has been getting very rich indeed—off record sales, energy drinks, self-help books, exercise routines, headphones, you name it. 50 Cent is healthier than you and wealthier than you, but he also believes you can get there, too, if you follow his advice. So, GQ’s Zach Baron spent a month as the hip-hop mogul’s prized pupil, making vision boards, hitting the gym, and reorienting his consciousness, to see if he could get a little bit more like 50.

On relationships:

“I think friendship is the strongest form of relationship. Don’t ever forget to be friends. And you be conscious. Because there’s a point that your friendship would develop that it has so much value that it would become priceless. And at that point, you should consider marriage.”

On his family:

“Me and my son, we don’t have a relationship anymore. It’s based on his mom. He’s adopted her way of thinking. I don’t have anything negative around the concept of kids.”

On why he left Interscope:

“When people couldn’t care less about you actually being successful, you can feel it.”

On Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo:

“I enabled these guys. I wouldn’t have been a friend if I didn’t help them. But helping them hurt them. Maybe I was paying them to be friends.”

On Puffy:

“He’s a sucker”

On being a life coach:

“I like the life-coach concept—it’s a cool concept. But my life’s not all the way right. To be coaching someone else, all I can do is give you the things that I would use. You see what I’m saying? We all have imperfections, man. We all have things that are not right.”

The Unstoppable Scarlett Johansson

In the March 24, 2014, issue of The New Yorker, in “Her Again” (p. 56), Anthony Lane profiles the actress Scarlett Johansson.

Scarlett Johansson in the New Yorker

According to Lane, “There is no getting away from Johansson,” whose high visibility is underscored not only by endorsement deals, and the recent announcement of her first pregnancy, but also by her two films opening on April 4th, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Under the Skin.” The actress recently ran into controversy because of her role as a spokesperson for SodaStream, which resulted in her resignation as a global ambassador for Oxfam. Of the ordeal, Johansson tells Lane, “I think I was put into a position that was way larger than anything I could possibly—I mean, this is an issue that is much bigger than something I could just be dropped into the middle of.”

Johansson’s extensive filmography includes several Woody Allen movies—she is, “needless to say, a loyal fan” of the director, Lane writes. Lane asks Johansson if, in the wake of recent events, she would work with Allen again. “I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t,” Johansson says. According to Lane, “Under the Skin,” which is directed by Jonathan Glazer, “is Johansson’s best movie to date.” And “she will never make a more unlikely one.” It is a science-fiction film, and a horror story, but much of it resembles a documentary. Johansson tells Lane that her role in the film is “so revealing that it’s ugly at times.” It shows her, Lane writes, “at her boldest and her most withheld: she yields herself up, without demur, and yet keeps so much in check that the outcome will reduce many viewers to a state of confusion and rage.” Johansson likens the film to “Eyes Wide Shut”—“the first Kubrick I ever saw in the cinema. The first time I hated it, the second time I loved it, by the third time I was obsessed.” Johansson’s character, nameless in the film, is—as the audience gradually comes to learn—a form of alien, landed or stranded among us, and acquiring human males not for sex or friendship but for the serial harvesting of their meat. “A pattern may be emerging: ‘Under the Skin’ slots in neatly beside ‘Her,’ and also beside the upcoming ‘Lucy,’ in which she plays a drug mule who ingests some of her cargo and develops unusual superpowers,” Lane writes. All three movies are drawn to otherworldliness. “There’s an existential feel to each project—a near-distant, futuristic feel,” Johansson tells Lane. “The irony is that, for all this sheen of modernity, she is an old-fashioned kind of star,” Lane writes.
