At the end of March, Perez reported that the Sex And The City Movie was on and women worldwide got very exicted at the prospect of Carrie, Mr Big et al showing up on the big screen. How much truth though was in this? Bed Widdicombe reports today in his NY Daily News column, on the different stories that the would be stars are telling on the red carpet of Condé Nast Traveler magazine’s Hot List party at the Bowery Hotel last week.

Cynthia Nixon said she thought the “Sex and the City” movie was going to happen. But when her former co-star Jason Lewis came by later, he sniped, “She should be hopeful.” Ouch!

Disturbia with Shia LeBoeuf continues to top the US box office this weekend but close on its heels is Fracture, starring another actor the industry has high hopes for - Canadian Ryan Gosling who has already received an Oscar nomination for his last film - Half Nelson

Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling star in the dramatic thriller Fracture. When a meticulous structural engineer (Hopkins) is found innocent of the attempted murder of his wife (Embeth Davidtz), the young district attorney (Gosling) who is prosecuting him becomes a crusader for justice. Fracture is packed with twists and turns that weave in and out of the courtroom as the pair try to outwit each other. The film features an outstanding supporting cast that includes Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck) and Rosamund Pike (Pride & Prejudice), is directed by Gregory Hoblit (Primal Fear), and written by Daniel Pyne (The Sum of All Fears, The Manchurian Candidate) and Glenn Gers.
Blades of Glory continues its strong run while The Reaping, Grindhouse and The Perfect Stranger continue to tank. Hot Fuzz which is brought to you by the same guys who brought us Shaun Of The Dead, entered the US market with strong numbers - debuting at number 4.

Halle Berry bedecked out in purple showed up in Mexico yesterday for yet another premiere of A Perfect Stranger or Seduciendo A Un Extrano in Spanish - which sounds like a lot sexier like Halle herself.
Pity the movie is whoreanous - only scoring 10% on rottentomatoes.com. Some of the kinder critiques include:
The only reason this movie might not win any Razzies next year is because no one will remember it even came out - Undergroundonline
Perfectly awful…[a] luridly trashy whodunit that quickly degenerates into an appalling whydidtheydoit. - One Guy’s Opinion
Just when you thought The Reaping was the most convoluted and overwrought flashback-riddled thriller starring an Academy Award-winning actress in theaters, along comes Perfect Stranger. - Chicago Sun-Times
The movie is currently sitting at no.4 at the US Box Office and has somehow managed to rake in a not too terrible $13.3 million

If there’s one film I’m really looking forward to it’s the new St. Trinians movie. Starring Rupert Everett in drag, Emily Watson, Colin Firth, Stephen Fry, Richard E Grant, comedian Russell Brand and appearances from supermodel Lily Cole and singer Amy Winehouse the premise for this the newest in the St. Trinian installments is that the “school for ‘young ladies” with its anarchic doctrine of free expression, brings together a motley crew of ungovernable girls who, using their wit and ingenuity, save the school from bankruptcy”.

The poor weekend opening numbers (coming in at no. 4 at $11.6 million) has disappointed everyone involved in the Tarantino/Rodriguez flick including producer Harvey Weinstein:
”First of all, I’m incredibly disappointed. We tried to do something new and obviously we didn’t do it that well”. It’s just a question of how is it going to hang in there. But we could split the movies in a couple of weeks. Make Tarantino’s a full-length film, and Rodriguez’s too. We’ll be adding those ‘two missing reels’ that’s talked about in the movie.” (At one point in Grindhouse, a sex scene is interrupted because of ”two missing reels” — one of the many conceits and indulgences.)
As to why Weinstein thought the movie played out to such poor opening numbers:
“Our research showed the length kept people away. It was the single biggest deterrent. It was 3 hours and 12 minutes long. We originally intended to get it all in in 2 hours, 30 minutes. That would have been a better time. But the movies ran longer, the [fake] trailers ran longer, everything ran longer”. Weinstein also criticized his own marketing plan. “We didn’t educate the South or Midwest. In the West and the East, the movie played well. It played well in strong urban settings. But we missed the boat on the Midwest and the South.”
No mention of whether the choice of weekend to open was a negative factor. Whether people celebrate Easter or not, it’s traditionally a family weekend, not let’s watch a lady with a machine gun for a leg shoot people up weeked. The 3 hour plus argument is in my opinion a cop out of an argument from Weinstein, I’ll leave Tarantino with the last word on this one:
“One thing I don’t understand is that average American moviegoers cannot watch a movie for three hours, yet they’ll watch a stupid, boring, horrific football game for four hours. Now, that is boredom at its most colossal.”
