If you haven’t gotten lost in the MTV Video Music Awards this past week with the Britney fiasco and the Kid Rock vs Tommy Lee scuffle, then you know that OJ Simpson has gotten himself in a bit of trouble again. No, he hasn’t been out slashing up the neighborhood. It would appear that Mr. Simpson was arrested today in connection with a reported armed robbery of sports memorabilia in a Las Vegas hotel room on Thursday night.
Two sports memorabilia dealers, Alfred Beardsley of Glendale, Calif., and Bruce L. Fromong of North Las Vegas, Nev., told the police that a group of men, which he said included two men with guns, entered his room at the off-Strip Palace Station around 8 p.m. that day and left with a haul of memorabilia ranging from photos and books signed by Simpson as well as lithographs of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana and even Mr. Beardsley’s cellphone.
Mr. Fromong and Mr. Beardsley told the police that the group was directed by Mr. Simpson.
“Everybody knows this is stolen stuff,” Mr. Simpson was quoted as saying. “Not only wasn’t there a break-in, but Riccio came to the lobby and escorted us up to the room,” making a reference to Tom Riccio, an auction house owner. “In any event, it’s stolen stuff that’s mine. Nobody was roughed up.”
Officials from the Las Vegas Police Department said in press interviews Sunday that Simpson was taken into custody at The Palms Hotel and was being held at Las Vegas police offices pending the arrival of his lawyer, who was expected later today, Police Capt. James Dillon told the Associated Press.
Dillon said the charges against Simpson could include robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and burglary with a firearm, all felonies, according to the AP.
Justice… too little, too late, but possibly justice nevertheless?
