Actors often have to change their appearance drastically in order to be believable in the movies they’re a part of. There are even a number of actors who have had to gain or lose a considerable amount of weight in order to play the part they’ve been chosen to play. Here are a few celebrities who underwent significant physical transformation to make sure their performance was especially breathtaking or realistic.
The actor lost 62 pounds for his role in the psychological thriller The Machinist. Bale played the main character, a man who suffers from severe insomnia for a year and becomes emaciated from neglecting to eat.
According to The Telegraph, Bale spent four months preparing for the role, and only consumed an apple and cup of coffee a day to make his frame especially thin. He then had to gain the 62 pounds back for his next titular role in Batman Begins.
An apple was the only food Christian Bale consumed for 16 weeks to achieve a frail frame.
For the popular Bridget Jones’ Diary movies that were released in 2001 and 2004, Zellweger had to gain 20 pounds to play the buxom, quirky main character in the films. The weight was essential to the character of Bridget Jones, who is concerned about her appearance and hopes to find love soon, as the movie takes place when Jones is in her 30s. The actress, who is naturally thin, quickly returned to her normal weight in between roles.
Rapper and actor 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, underwent a dramatic change for his role in Things Fall Apart, a story about a football player struggling with cancer. Jackson’s normal weight is about 214 pounds; however, for the role, the actor dropped his weight down to 160. He was able to do this by following a liquid diet and working out on the treadmill for a little more than two months for three hours a day.
Beverages like green tea are often included in liquid diets, which people follow for weight loss and celebrities use to lose fat quickly.
Hathaway starred in the film Les Misreables, and lost 16 pounds for her role. She also shaved her head to make her body frame appear especially gaunt. She still had to keep a slim, fit frame for her next movie, The Dark Knight Rises, and became a vegetarian to keep body fat at bay. According to a Business Insider article, kale was a large part of her diet when preparing for the movie role.
Theron gained 30 pounds for her starring role in Monster. The star also wore makeup that made her skin look blotchy and full of blemishes, shaved her eyebrows off and donned prosthetic teeth for the role. The actress portrayed the Aileen Wuornos, a real-life serial killer in the film and wanted to match the woman’s appearance as closely as possible. The Daily Beast reports that Theron ate lots of donuts and potato chips to put on extra pounds for the movie.
It seems that in many cases, stardom can require real sacrifices. After all – how many of us are willing to lose or gain weight for our jobs?
