A Salute To Paul Potts, Opera Star

Special Note:
For those of you who emailed, worried that VIPGlamour.net was becoming the
Paul Potts website – please do not worry – this is just a follow up email to Salute the Great Achievement of Paul Potts winning Britain’s Got Talent
I cannot say that this will be the last Paul Potts post – but lets just say, posts about Paul will not be almost daily from now on.
That said, I know that many people who had never been to VIPGlamour.net in their life before, visited last week, just because of Paul Potts.
Indeed our original Paul Potts post from Monday the 11th June 2007 currently has 215 Comments – which is a record for any post at VipGlamour.net
We thank you all for your comments.
What many of you may not know is that the poster of the original post – ADMIN, is in fact not a regular poster at VIPGlamour and it was to some extent a “fluke” that the person in the ADMIN role on the 11th June even decided to add the original post. After all, Paul Potts was not really a celebrity at that time and frankly, “a future opera star” was not what the VIPGlamour.net audience is usually used to. (There will be a little more feedback on ADMIN and the “story” of how the original post happened at the end of this post)
Anyway – This is a Salute To Paul Potts, Opera Star
To do that, we thought we would just repeat a few of the 300 + comments we have now received in response to our various Paul Potts posts.
It would be fair to say, there have been a few negative comments about Paul also – such as the very first comment by someone calling themselves ME,
who said “evident enthusiasm can’t replace raw vocal talent – this man hasn’t got it.”
Fortunately for Paul most of the viewers of Britains Got Talent and our many other posters did not agree.
We can only feature a few comments – and these comments are from all over the world, not just the UK, so I think it is fair to say, Paul made a GLOBAL IMPACT.
Very Well Done Again Paul Potts

I have never been an opera fan but I download every version of this song I could find so that I could listen to such a beautiful song but they all sucked. Paul adds the vary real human element that had been missing from the rest. “Relatabilty” he’s a real guy
and love it made me cry..I want to send him Money spectacular performance one of the best I have ever seen.
If it was perfect the point would not get across to the audience if your voice doesn’t cracle a bit. I wound not believe the passion and that was a million dollar performance.

Pavarotti and the other tenors may be technically more proficient, but Potts brings something extra to his singing. An opera fan may sit there and catalogue his deficiencies, and prefer one of the “greats”, but to the average person who rarely if ever listens to opera, Potts is a rare treat. I can’t appreciate Pavarotti’s technical perfection. I don’t know enough about opera, or have a trained ear. To me, Pavarotti lacks emotion, a feeling for the music. He does what he does extremely well, but it leaves me flat. Potts emotes the music…..he evokes as he sings. If he is not technically perfect, I can’t tell the difference.
Given the choice to pay to hear Pavarotti or Potts, I’ll go for Potts every time. The opera buffs will go for Pavarotti, and thus we will both be satisfied.

I believe Marianne Williamson summed up the opportunity Paul has taken (and additionally quoted by Nelson Mandela in his inauguration address):
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
If only we all realised not only our true potential but the potential of others. Comments from people like “Me” serve only to justify hiding of their light and to hinder those less confident from letting their light shine.
Well done Paul, I look forward to seeing and hearing from you soon. You inspire me!

I first saw the video and heard Paul sing today on our morning news show here in Western Australia, now tell me that if they thought it was anything short of outstanding that it would have been played over here in OZ.

Must have played this half a dozen times. Then compared it to the “pros”. I cannot say if Paul has talent. All I can say is that I was enthralled by his performance. I even ran the video for my wife, (who finds it difficult to absorb opera). She stood and watched while I re-played it several times. Absorbed.
Soul piercing song. Goosebumps raising. Absolutely delightful. Chase your dream Paul. Never give it up. Mario Lanza would be proud of you.
When a goal is scored in English football, barely half the crowd stand up. This man had the whole audience at their feet, the male judges flabbergasted, and the female judge teary eyed.
To the naysayers I say – Your life will be the poorer for wishing to deprive this person of his joy.

I’m from Montréal, Canada. I saw on the news the performance from Paul Potts. Just amazing. Tell me how such a singer can sell cell. phone instead of showing is great gift is has with is voice. I just wish I can follow this show from my place. May be, he will not be the winner of this year competition but one thing for sure he will sing for leaving instead of selling telephone very soon. I hold a Masters degree in Music (my undergrad degree was in Music Education, my Masters in Performance). I have taught music for over 20 years.
That said, all you musical snobs who would turn your collective noses up to this gentleman (Mr. Paul Potts) can go listen to whatever you choose. You have lost sight of the essence of music: music, like the visual arts, exists, in part, to create an impression on its listeners’ souls. Clearly this performance has done that.
Are there more technical, more highly-trained singers? Of course. However, the Arts depend upon EMOTION, not perfection.
Take your snobbery somewhere else. I dedicated my life to Music because I love what it does for my soul. This performance makes me glad to have made that choice.

Paul Potts was brilliant and a refreshing change
I cried when he won and yes needless to say I voted for him and I will pay to see him perform any day goo Luck Paul and I am very proud of you
Comment by Adina
Luckily the complete joy that I felt from this beautiful performance was not spoiled in any way by an over-appreciation of opera.
Paul Potts moved me to tears in less than 30 seconds; no other opera singer (including Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma) has ever done that. Paul Potts projects pure beauty in both spirit and voice.
Who is ADMIN? What is the “history” of the original post?

I had tears in my eyes after the first few seconds of his song in the British talent show. What a genuinely honest and utterly humble talent he has. Pavarotti step aside. May the Gods of Opera rejoice upon his discovery. I know us motrals are.

Muzikteechur – I agree with all your wonderful comments. Paul is the People’s Tenor. I hope the pro operatics wake up and use this opportunity to reach out to the public in the way Paul did. The way Pavarotti has. Show us your beauty, Opera, as Paul has, and if you are not perfect, we will love you even more.

I absolutely have no greater words to describe HOW AMAZING his voice is, just as the audience in the videos, I couldn’t help to cry, I’ve never been an opera fan but Jeeesus Christ, Paul Potts is an angel living in the body of someone you would never think can hold that beautiful voice, I certainly can’t describe how astonishing that was to hear him sing, Paul Potts should be sitting right next to God.

I could not agree more with gahrie. I actually listened to Pavarotti and several of the opera stars performance of the same opera. I agree, Pavarotti is technically better and has a more powerful voice than Paul. However his performance leaves me cold after hearing Paul. Paul brings more emotion to opera than just about any tenor I have heard. He puts more of himself into his singing. Pavarotti powers his way through his performance with little emotion. Great job Paul. Much luck and success.

what a magnificent voice. I don’t like all opera but this man makes you sit up & listen. Great Job Paul, great job. Love your voice leaves me with chills. MORE, MORE !

Paul, congratulations! You have brought more joy than you will ever know, to so many people. My husband (Retired LTColonel, USAF) will listen to music once in awhile. You touched his very soul and brought tears to his eyes. We both continue to get goosebumps every time we listen to your voice . Continue to live your dream, as YOUR dream brings so much to the rest of us. All the best, you certainly deserve all good things. (As for the bullies in your past — be comforted in knowing that eventually everyone reaps what they sow, including those bullies.)

Paul Potts singing O Holy Night is wonderful. I hope he gets the best training like Pavorotti had,. Something about his voice has the magic touch, that others have not, his tenor range is the best, but he does not shout like most opera singer today. Katherine Jenkins voice is the same tone, after one song, no more.
ann // Dec 6, 2007 at 11:21 am
Paul Potts singing O Holy Night, is magnificent. Pauls tenor range is the best, but the soft effect that comes across makes you want to listen to him again and again. Katherine Jenkins is the same tone throughout, one song is enough. Paul, all day I could listen to you, get the best training like the others, plus you are the most humble guy there is, that makes you doubly the best.

I am very rarely moved to tears in hearing someone sing….but certainly was in hearing Paul Potts sing! What a beautiful, awesomely amazing man!! His humility, combined with his God-given talent in singing is enough to lift us up to celestial heights. I have never been to the Opera, but after hearing Mr Potts, very much look forward to my first opera. God bless you Paul Potts!!

I was knocked off my feet when Paul Potts opened his mouth to sing. Will be BUYING his albums as fast as he records them – he deserves our respect and therefore, the income. Paul’s humbleness is a quality that can’t be faked but comes from his character. What a sweetheart!
Thank you, Paul, for having the courage to share your astonishing gift.
