Halle Berry, yesterday at the Beverley Hills Hotel. Halle was helping to run a ‘Fashion Is Inspiring’ runway show for The Jenesse Centre of which she serves as an honorary chair. The centre helps battered women and children who are looking for shelter. Donna Karen, Luca Luca and Christian Louboutin all donated pieces for the show.
In Redbook in March 2003, Halle revealed that she had been in an abusive relationship [Her first marriage to baseball star David Justice ended badly in 1996 with hints of alleged physical abuse. During the divorce proceedings, Berry requested a restraining order, saying that Justice was harassing her. Early on in her career she had a romance with a fellow actor whom she refuses to name, who beat her so severely she lost most of the hearing in her right ear]
“I’ve never disclosed who it was, but that guy hit me that one time and that was the last time. It [the relationship] was done the minute he did that. The one thing my mother always told me, `If a man hits you, you leave smoke. You get to gettin’.’ So I got my stuff and got goin’.”
This year she gave an interview with Reader’s Digest in which she stated: “I haven’t been a battered woman, contrary to what people have written about me. I’m so not a battered woman. Have I been in physical altercations with men? Absolutely. But the minute that happens they see the back of me. My mother was a battered woman. She was battered by my dad.”
Halle takes her work with the centre very seriously, a fact that the Jenesse centre recognised recently by making the Oscar winning actress Chairperson of their Year of Giving Campaign
