On Thursday, November 23, 2006, magician David Blaine successfully completed his stunt. This time, Blaine did not do this for publicity sake but for a very good cause. The magician successfully pulled off Target’s challenge – escaping from a gyroscope five stories above Times Square, freeing his shackled hands and feet, jumping 50 feet and crashing into a wooden rostrum below him. The challenge was to help co-host a charity event with the Salvation Army to provide100 children with shopping spree the day after Thanksgiving. That is, if he completed the stunt. Blaine spent sixty-one hours suspended in the air not only in restraints but had to strategically fight dizziness, fatigue and possible hypothermia. But he never gave up. This challenge was important to him because The Salvation Army provided him clothing as he was growing up. He told reporters. “This challenge was close to my heart!” Then he continued. “This is my way of giving back!” The stunt help the families of the 100 children selected for the benefit. Each family received a $500.00 Target Gift Card.
